Curaçao on a Budget

Curaçao is sometimes perceived as an expensive destination, and while accommodation and dining can add up, the island offers a surprising number of completely free experiences that rank among the best things you can do here. Some of the most iconic Curaçao moments — walking along the colorful Handelskade, snorkeling with sea turtles, watching a Caribbean sunset — cost nothing at all.

Whether you are traveling on a tight budget or simply want to balance paid excursions with free adventures, these five activities should be on every visitor's list. They capture the essence of what makes Curaçao special: the colors, the culture, the marine life, and the laid-back Caribbean atmosphere that money cannot buy.

1. Walk the Handelskade and Queen Emma Bridge

The Handelskade waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Caribbean's most iconic views.

The Handelskade waterfront in Willemstad is one of the most photographed locations in the entire Caribbean, and for good reason. This row of brightly painted Dutch colonial buildings — in candy shades of yellow, pink, blue, and orange — lines the harbor of the Punda district and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking along the waterfront costs nothing, and the colors are genuinely as vivid in person as they look in photographs.

Cross the Queen Emma Bridge, the famous pontoon bridge that swings open to let ships pass through the harbor entrance. When the bridge is open, a free ferry shuttles pedestrians across. On the Otrobanda side, you get the classic postcard view of the Handelskade across the water — especially stunning at sunset or after dark when the buildings are illuminated.

Take your time exploring the narrow streets of Punda behind the waterfront. The Floating Market, where Venezuelan traders sell produce from their boats, is nearby and free to browse. Fort Amsterdam, the historic center of the colonial government, is also worth a look. You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering Willemstad's historic core without spending anything.

2. Snorkel at Public Beaches

Some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean is available for free at Curaçao's public beaches. Playa Lagun, a small cove on the west coast, has a healthy reef just meters from shore where you can spot sea turtles, octopus, and colorful reef fish in crystal-clear water. The beach is free to access, with only optional paid parking nearby.

Kleine Knip (Playa Kenepa Chiki) is another outstanding free snorkeling beach. The turquoise water here is almost unreal in its clarity, and the reef supports a wonderful variety of marine life. There are no entrance fees, though facilities are basic — bring your own food, water, and shade. Both beaches are on the island's west coast, about 40 minutes from Willemstad.

If you do not have your own snorkel gear, you can rent a basic mask-and-snorkel set at many beaches or from shops in Willemstad for a few dollars a day. Even without gear, simply swimming in these impossibly clear waters and looking down at the reef below is an experience worth having.

Local tip: Arrive early (before 10 AM) at Kleine Knip and Playa Lagun, as parking fills up quickly and shade is limited. Bring your own water and snacks — there are few vendors at these beaches.

3. Explore Pietermaai Street Art District

Pietermaai, once a neglected neighborhood just east of Punda, has transformed into one of Willemstad's most vibrant districts. The streets are lined with restored colonial mansions, trendy restaurants, and — most visually — large-scale murals and street art that cover walls, buildings, and alleyways throughout the area.

The street art ranges from huge, photorealistic portraits to abstract designs, political commentary, and whimsical Caribbean-themed pieces. Many were painted by international and local artists during organized street art festivals, and new works appear regularly. Walking through Pietermaai is like visiting an open-air gallery, and it is completely free.

While you are in the area, walk through the neighboring Scharloo district as well. Once the wealthy merchant quarter, Scharloo has its own collection of murals and is in the midst of a slow revitalization, with crumbling mansions sitting alongside beautifully restored ones. The combination of decay and renewal, history and contemporary art, gives these neighborhoods a character that is uniquely Curaçao.

4. Watch Sea Turtles at Playa Piskado

Playa Piskado (also known as Playa Grandi) near the western village of Westpunt is one of the most remarkable free wildlife experiences in the Caribbean. Local fishermen clean their catch at a dock here, and the scraps attract green sea turtles that swim right up to the shore. On any given day, you can sit on the dock or wade into the shallow water and watch these magnificent animals feeding just meters away.

The turtles are wild — they are not fenced in or managed in any way — but they have become habituated to the fishermen's presence and are remarkably tolerant of snorkelers and swimmers. If you bring a mask and snorkel, you can float in the water alongside them for an unforgettable encounter. There is no entrance fee, no ticket booth, and no schedule — just show up, ideally in the morning when the fishermen are most active.

This is hands-down one of the best free activities on the island and one of the highlights of many visitors' entire trips. Please remember to observe from a respectful distance and never touch the turtles — they are a protected species.

Local tip: Mornings are best, when the fishermen are actively cleaning their catch and the turtles are most numerous. Bring your own snorkel gear for the full experience.

5. Catch a Sunset at the Beach

Curaçao's west-facing coastline serves up spectacular sunsets almost every evening, and watching one from the beach is a perfect way to end the day. Mambo Beach on the south coast is a popular spot — while the beach club area charges for chairs, the public strip of sand is free, and you can watch the sky turn orange and pink with a view over the water.

For a quieter sunset experience, head to one of the west-coast beaches like Playa Jeremi or Playa Lagun, where the sun drops straight into the sea. The informal bar at Karakter beach in Jan Thiel is another beloved sunset spot — you can watch from the public beach area without ordering anything, though the temptation to grab a cocktail is strong.

If you are in Willemstad, the waterfront along Pietermaai and the Rif Fort area on the Otrobanda side both offer beautiful sunset views over the harbor. The whole sky turns golden, the lights on the Handelskade begin to glow, and you are reminded why you came to the Caribbean in the first place.
