A Postcard Come to Life
There are beaches in Curaçao that impress with dramatic cliffs, and there are beaches that enchant with underwater life. Playa Cas Abao is the rare one that does everything well. A wide strip of powdery white sand, a row of tall palm trees offering dappled shade, water that shifts from pale green to deep blue, and a healthy reef just a short swim from shore—it’s the kind of place that makes you involuntarily whisper “wow” when you first see it.
Located on the western coast between Boca Sint Michiel and Sint Willibrordus, Cas Abao has been a favourite of both tourists and residents for years. Unlike some of the island’s wilder beaches, it’s well-maintained with proper facilities, which makes it a great option for people who want natural beauty without roughing it.
Facilities and Entry Fee
Cas Abao is a managed beach, which means there’s a small entry fee of approximately ANG 6 (about $3.35 USD) per person on weekdays, slightly higher on weekends and holidays. That fee goes toward maintaining the grounds, and honestly, it shows—the beach is clean, the facilities are well-kept, and the overall experience feels polished.
Once inside, you can rent loungers and umbrellas for a reasonable fee, or simply lay your towel on the sand under the palms. There’s a full-service beach restaurant and bar serving lunch, cocktails, and cold beers. You’ll also find showers, changing rooms, and a dive shop where you can rent snorkeling gear or book a guided dive.
Local tip: If you want a lounger in the shade of the palm trees, arrive before 10 a.m.—they go fast. The ones closer to the water tend to stay available longer.
Snorkeling at Cas Abao
The snorkeling at Cas Abao is excellent and suitable for all levels. The reef starts relatively close to shore—swim out past the sandy bottom and within a few minutes you’ll be floating over coral heads teeming with life. Look for parrotfish, trumpetfish, blue tang, sergeant majors, and brain coral formations. If you’re patient and the water is calm, you may spot a sea turtle or a stingray gliding over the sand.
The left side of the beach (looking out to sea) tends to have the best reef coverage. The visibility is usually excellent—15 to 30 metres on a good day—making this one of the top shore-snorkeling spots on the island. The dive shop rents masks, snorkels, and fins at fair prices if you didn’t bring your own.
What Makes Cas Abao Special
Cas Abao strikes a balance that’s hard to find. It’s developed enough to be comfortable—you can spend a full day here without needing to bring anything but a swimsuit—but it hasn’t been commercialised to the point where it loses its character. The palm trees are real (not planted decorations), the reef is healthy, and the atmosphere is genuinely relaxed.
It’s also one of the few beaches on the island where you can find genuine white sand. Many of Curaçao’s beaches have a coral or tan colour, which is beautiful in its own right, but Cas Abao’s bright white shore is strikingly different and gives the water an almost luminous quality when the sun hits it right.
Practical Information
The drive from Willemstad takes about 30 minutes heading west. The access road is paved and leads to a good-sized parking lot. The beach is open daily, and weekday visits are generally quieter and slightly cheaper than weekends.
Cas Abao works well for couples, solo travellers, and families alike. The shallow entry makes it comfortable for children, and the facilities mean you don’t need to pack everything yourself. If you only have time for one or two beaches during your trip, Cas Abao should be on your shortlist.
