Choosing Curaçao’s Best Beaches
Curaçao has over 35 named beaches scattered along its southern and western coasts, and every visitor seems to develop their own personal ranking within a few days. But after countless trips across the island, some beaches consistently rise to the top. These five aren’t just the prettiest—they’re the ones that deliver the most complete experience, balancing beauty, water quality, snorkeling, and atmosphere.
Whether you have a week on the island or just a few days, these are the beaches that should anchor your itinerary. We’ve listed them in the order we’d recommend visiting, saving the most iconic for last.
1. Kleine Knip — The Icon
Playa Kenepa Chiki, as the locals call it, is the single most photographed beach in Curaçao—and for good reason. A compact crescent of sand framed by rust-coloured cliffs, with water so turquoise it looks digitally enhanced. It’s free, it’s raw, and it’s unforgettable.
The trade-off is minimal facilities and a steep staircase down from the parking lot. Come on a weekday morning for the best experience, and bring everything you need—water, sunscreen, snacks. There’s no shade on the beach itself, so a hat or umbrella is essential.

2. Playa Cas Abao — The All-Rounder
Cas Abao is the beach that has it all: white sand, palm trees, excellent snorkeling, and full facilities including a restaurant, bar, and dive shop. The small entry fee (around ANG 6) is money well spent—the beach is impeccably maintained, and you can spend an entire day here in total comfort.
The reef starts close to shore and is teeming with life. It’s one of the best spots on the island for combining a classic beach day with quality snorkeling, and the palm-shaded loungers make it hard to leave.
3. Playa Porto Marie — The Snorkeler’s Paradise
If you’re serious about snorkeling, Porto Marie’s double reef is mandatory. Two parallel reef systems running along the shore create an underwater landscape that rivals many paid dive sites elsewhere in the Caribbean. Add in a comfortable beach with loungers, a good restaurant, and natural shade from divi-divi trees, and you’ve got a top-tier beach experience.
The marked underwater snorkel trail is a nice touch that helps first-time visitors navigate the reef. Entry is around ANG 6 per person.
4. Grote Knip — The Crowd Pleaser
Playa Kenepa Grandi is bigger and more versatile than its smaller sibling. The wide bay offers plenty of space, the cliffs are perfect for jumping, and the snorkeling along the edges is solid. It’s free, there’s a small snack bar, and the vibe—especially on weekends when local families take over—is warm and welcoming.
Grote Knip is the beach for people who want drama, activity, and room to breathe. Combine it with Kleine Knip for the definitive west-coast day.
5. Playa Lagun — The Turtle Encounter
Tiny Playa Lagun makes this list not for its sand—it’s small and gravelly—but for what happens in the water. This sheltered cove is the most reliable spot on the island to snorkel with green sea turtles, and a good morning here can be the highlight of your entire trip.
The water is calm, the cliff-wall snorkeling is dramatic, and the small beach bar adds just enough convenience. It’s a must-visit for anyone with a mask and a sense of wonder.
- •Kleine Knip — Best for photography and iconic views
- •Cas Abao — Best all-around beach day
- •Porto Marie — Best snorkeling (double reef)
- •Grote Knip — Best for cliff jumping and families
- •Playa Lagun — Best for sea turtle encounters
Local tip: Rent a car and tackle all five in two days: Day 1 = Cas Abao + Porto Marie. Day 2 = Playa Lagun + Kleine Knip + Grote Knip.
