What Is Klein Curaçao?

Pristine white sand beach with turquoise water on a remote island
Klein Curaçao's leeward beach is a pristine stretch of white sand with crystal-clear water.

Klein Curaçao ("Little Curaçao") is a small, uninhabited island about 15 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of the main island. Barely 1.7 kilometers long and 600 meters wide, this flat coral island feels like the edge of the world — a sliver of blindingly white sand surrounded by impossibly clear turquoise water, with no buildings, no roads, and no permanent inhabitants.

The island has a haunting beauty. A 19th-century lighthouse, built in 1879 and long since abandoned, stands in weathered ruin on the eastern end. The rusting hull of a shipwrecked vessel lies half-buried on the windward shore. Pink sand sections mix with the white beach on the leeward side, and the offshore reef supports some of the healthiest coral in the region.

Klein Curaçao is also an important nesting ground for sea turtles, particularly green turtles and loggerheads, which come ashore to lay their eggs between May and November. A day trip here is one of the most memorable experiences you can have on a Curaçao vacation.

The Boat Trip Over

Getting to Klein Curaçao requires a boat trip of about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the vessel and sea conditions. Several operators run regular day trips, departing early in the morning (usually between 6:30 and 8:00 AM) and returning in the late afternoon around 4:00 to 5:00 PM. This gives you roughly five to six hours on the island.

The most well-known operators include Miss Ann Boat Trips, Bounty Adventures, and BlueFinn Charters. Miss Ann is a catamaran that offers a smooth ride and typically includes lunch, drinks, and snorkeling equipment in the ticket price. Bounty Adventures runs a larger vessel and is popular with groups. BlueFinn offers a speedboat option that cuts the travel time significantly. Prices generally range from $100 to $150 per person, with most tours including food, drinks, and basic snorkel gear.

Be aware that the crossing can be rough, especially on the return trip when the wind typically picks up in the afternoon. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding — once you are on the open water, it is too late. Reef-safe seasickness patches or tablets taken 30 to 60 minutes before departure work well for most people.

Local tip: Book your trip several days in advance, especially during high season (December–April). Tours can sell out. Choose a catamaran for a smoother ride if you are concerned about seasickness.

What to Do on the Island

Most of your time on Klein Curaçao will be spent on the beautiful leeward beach, where the tour boats anchor. The water here is shallow, calm, and stunningly clear — perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The reef just offshore is healthy and vibrant, with excellent chances of seeing sea turtles, reef fish, and colorful coral formations. Some visitors spot eagle rays and even reef sharks in the deeper water.

A walk across the island (it takes about 20 minutes) brings you to the windward side, where the ocean is rougher and the shipwreck sits partially embedded in the sand. The abandoned lighthouse is a popular photo spot — its crumbling stone walls and faded red-and-white stripes are atmospheric against the flat, barren landscape.

The island has virtually no natural shade, so most operators set up tents, umbrellas, or a shaded beach area for their guests. A few small shelters and the lighthouse walls provide some relief from the sun, but do not count on finding shade on your own. This is a place to relax, swim, snorkel, explore, and simply enjoy one of the most unspoiled spots in the Caribbean.

  • Snorkel the leeward reef — look for sea turtles and eagle rays
  • Walk to the windward side to see the shipwreck
  • Visit the abandoned 1879 lighthouse
  • Relax on the pristine white and pink sand beach
  • Keep an eye out for nesting sea turtles (May–November)

What to Bring

Since Klein Curaçao is uninhabited and has no facilities, preparation is key. Most tour operators include lunch and drinks in the ticket price, but it is wise to bring extra water and snacks just in case. Confirm with your operator exactly what is included before you go.

Sunscreen is absolutely essential — and make sure it is reef-safe. The sun on a flat, shadeless island surrounded by reflective water and white sand is intense, even for people who rarely burn. A rash guard or UV-protective shirt is highly recommended. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and something to cover your shoulders during the heat of the day.

If you have your own snorkel gear, bring it. Tour-provided equipment is fine, but your own mask will fit better and give you a more comfortable experience. Water shoes are helpful for getting in and out of the boat and walking on the rocky sections of the island. A dry bag for your phone and valuables is also smart — there is nowhere to lock things up.

Local tip: Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go out and reapply every 2 hours. Seriously — the sun here is no joke. Reef-safe sunscreen protects both you and the coral.

Planning Your Klein Curaçao Day Trip

Day trips to Klein Curaçao run year-round, but sea conditions are calmest between January and September. During the rainy season (October–December), trips may occasionally be cancelled due to rough seas. Operators will generally inform you the day before if conditions are too rough.

Budget around $100 to $150 per person for the trip, including food and drinks. This is one of the pricier activities on Curaçao, but it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you are visiting for a week or longer, it is well worth dedicating a full day to this excursion.

Most boats depart from Spanish Water or Caracasbaai on the southeast coast, about a 20-minute drive from Willemstad. Plan for an early start — you will likely need to be at the departure point by 6:30 to 7:30 AM. Make it an easy evening the night before, have a light breakfast, and take your seasickness medication if needed. You will return tired, sun-kissed, and with some of the best photos from your entire trip.
