The Seven Inlets of Curaçao's North Coast

Waves crashing into rocky coastal inlets at Shete Boka
The north coast of Curaçao reveals the raw power of the open Caribbean Sea.

Shete Boka, which means "Seven Inlets" in Papiamentu, is a national park that protects a stretch of Curaçao's rugged, wave-battered north coast. While the island's south and west sides are known for calm, crystal-clear snorkeling beaches, the north coast is a completely different world — dramatic limestone cliffs, churning surf, blowholes that shoot spray meters into the air, and natural inlets where the ocean surges inland through narrow channels in the rock.

The park is located adjacent to Christoffel National Park at the northwestern end of the island. It is compact and easy to explore, typically requiring 30 to 60 minutes for the main highlights, though you could spend longer if you walk the full trail connecting the different bokas. The contrast with the calm leeward coast is striking, and a visit here gives you a much fuller picture of Curaçao's diverse landscape.

Boka Tabla: The Star Attraction

The centerpiece of the park is Boka Tabla, a large natural cave that opens directly onto the sea. A path leads from the parking area down to the cave entrance, where you can walk inside and stand on a platform as waves surge in through the opening. The sound is thunderous — each wave funnels into the cave and explodes against the back wall in a shower of spray. On days with big swells, the force is genuinely impressive.

Above the cave, a viewing platform on the cliff top gives you a bird's-eye perspective of the inlet. From here, you can watch the waves roll in and crash against the rocks below, sending white spray into the air. The turquoise and deep blue colors of the water against the grey and tan limestone create a visual spectacle that photographers love.

The cave is the most-visited spot in the park, and for good reason. It is easily accessible — just a short walk from the parking area — and the experience of standing inside while the ocean surges around you is genuinely thrilling.

Local tip: Be careful on wet rocks near the cave and cliff edges. The spray can make surfaces slippery. Wear shoes with good grip and keep a safe distance from the edge.

Walking the Coastal Trail

A trail connects several of the bokas along the coastline, and walking it is the best way to appreciate the full scope of the park. The path takes you past blowholes where compressed air and water shoot up through holes in the rock, smaller inlets where the water churns in mesmerizing patterns, and secluded pocket beaches tucked between the cliffs.

Boka Pistol is named for the sound it makes — waves compress air in an underground chamber, creating a boom that sounds like a gunshot. Boka Wandomi has a small, sheltered beach that is an important nesting site for sea turtles, particularly hawksbills and loggerheads, from April through November. During nesting season, park rangers monitor these beaches to protect the eggs from predators.

The full trail takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The terrain is mostly flat but rocky and uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. There is little to no shade along the trail, so bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.

  • Boka Tabla — walk-in sea cave with crashing waves
  • Boka Pistol — blowhole with a booming gunshot sound
  • Boka Wandomi — turtle nesting beach (April–November)
  • Multiple blowholes and dramatic wave action along the cliffs
  • Connecting trail: 30–45 minutes for the main highlights

Sea Turtle Conservation

Shete Boka plays a vital role in sea turtle conservation on Curaçao. The secluded beaches within the park are among the island's most important nesting sites for loggerhead, hawksbill, and green sea turtles. From April through November, female turtles haul themselves up onto these small, protected coves under cover of darkness to dig nests and lay their eggs.

The park works with conservation organizations to monitor nesting activity, protect eggs from feral animals and poaching, and track hatchling success rates. If you visit during nesting season, you may see marked nest sites on the beaches. Hatchlings emerge roughly 60 days after the eggs are laid, usually at night, and make their way to the sea by moonlight.

This conservation work is one of the key reasons the park was established, and your entrance fee helps fund the ongoing protection of these endangered animals.

Visiting Shete Boka: What You Need to Know

Shete Boka is located on the north coast near the entrance to Christoffel National Park, about 45 minutes by car from Willemstad. The entrance fee is approximately ANG 15 (around $8 USD) per person. The park has a small visitor center and parking area near the Boka Tabla entrance.

You can comfortably see the main highlights in 30 to 60 minutes, making it easy to combine with a morning hike at Christoffel (start early, hike the mountain, then cool down at Shete Boka) or with a drive along the west coast to visit beaches like Playa Kalki and Kleine Knip.

The park is open during daylight hours, and no reservation is needed. A car is essentially required to get here, as there is no reliable public transport to this part of the island. The drive itself is scenic, passing through Curaçao's rural countryside with cacti-studded hills and traditional landhuizen (plantation houses) along the way.

Local tip: Combine Shete Boka with Christoffel National Park for a full day of nature on the northwest coast. Hike Christoffel early, then drive to Shete Boka before heading to the beaches on the west coast for the afternoon.
