The End of the Road—In the Best Way

Playa Kalki is quite literally where the road ends on Curaçao’s western tip. Near the village of Westpunt, this small beach is the last stop on the island’s stunning west coast, and it rewards those who make the drive with some of the clearest water and best underwater scenery in the entire Caribbean.

The beach itself is compact—a small sandy area nestled into a rocky cove at the base of the cliffs. It’s not the place for beach volleyball or sprawling out with a large group. What it is, though, is a world-class entry point to the underwater world. Divers know this spot as home to the “Alice in Wonderland” dive site, one of the most celebrated shore dives in Curaçao.

The Famous “Alice in Wonderland” Dive

Crystal-clear water over a coral reef
The water clarity at Playa Kalki is some of the best in Curaçao

The Alice in Wonderland dive site gets its name from the surreal, oversized coral formations that dot the reef slope. Massive star corals and brain corals create a landscape that feels like a fantasy garden, with sponges, sea fans, and gorgonians filling in the spaces between. The reef starts shallow and slopes gently down to 30+ metres, making it suitable for divers of all levels.

Marine life is abundant: sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, barracuda, and schools of blue tang are regular visitors. On the deeper sections, you may spot reef sharks cruising in the blue. The site is diveable from shore, which means you don’t need a boat—just walk in from the beach, swim a few minutes, and you’re on the reef.

Local tip: Even if you’re not a certified diver, the snorkeling here is outstanding. The reef starts in just 1–2 metres of water, so you can see the same coral formations from the surface.

Snorkeling at Playa Kalki

You don’t need scuba gear to enjoy the underwater world at Playa Kalki. The snorkeling is among the best on the island—the reef is just steps from shore, the water is calm in the sheltered cove, and the coral is healthy and colourful. Swim along the rocky edges of the bay and you’ll pass over elkhorn coral, sea fans, and dense schools of tropical fish.

The visibility here is often 25 metres or more, which means you can see the deeper reef formations below you even while floating on the surface. It’s a mesmerising experience—like hovering above an underwater forest. Morning visits typically offer the best conditions, before the wind picks up in the afternoon.

Facilities and Getting There

Playa Kalki has a small but welcoming beach bar (part of the Lodge Kura Hulanda resort area) where you can get drinks, snacks, and basic meals. There are some loungers available for rent, and the dive shop rents both snorkeling and scuba gear.

The drive from Willemstad takes about 50 minutes to an hour, heading all the way to the northwestern tip. It’s the furthest beach from the capital, which keeps the crowds small but means you’ll want to combine it with visits to other west-coast beaches—Playa Lagun, Kleine Knip, and Grote Knip are all on the way back.

  • Entrance: Free (beach bar welcomes customers)
  • Parking: Small lot near the beach
  • Facilities: Beach bar, dive shop, some loungers
  • Shade: Some natural shade from cliffs and trees
  • Best for: Diving, snorkeling, experienced water lovers

Local tip: Make a full west-coast day of it: start at Playa Kalki in the morning, then work your way back east through Grote Knip, Kleine Knip, and Playa Lagun.
