Grote Knip: The Spectacular Cliff Beach

Grote Knip—known locally as Playa Kenepa Grandi—is the larger of the two famous Knip beaches on Curaçao’s western coast. While its smaller sibling Kleine Knip tends to steal the spotlight on social media, many visitors who have been to both quietly prefer Grote Knip for its sheer scale and the range of things you can do here.

The beach sits in a wide bay bordered by steep, layered cliffs that look like they were carved by a sculptor with a taste for the dramatic. The sand is soft and pale, the water is that signature Curaçao turquoise, and the overall vibe is lively but never overwhelming. Locals have been coming here for generations, and on weekends you’ll see families with coolers, kids doing cannonballs off the rocks, and groups of friends camped out for the day.

Grote Knip is probably the most popular spot on the island for cliff jumping. The cliffs on the south side of the bay offer jumping points at various heights—some are just a few metres above the water (great for first-timers), while the higher ledges will give your stomach that proper drop feeling.

The water below the cliffs is deep enough for safe jumping at the established spots, but always check conditions before you leap. After heavy swells, visibility can be reduced and there may be debris in the water. Watch what the locals do and follow their lead. And a word to the wise: scrambling up the rocks to reach the higher ledges is the harder part. Wear shoes with grip.

The snorkeling at Grote Knip is genuinely good, especially along the rocky edges of the bay. Swim to either side where the cliffs meet the water and you’ll find coral formations hosting a colourful cast of reef fish—blue tang, yellowtail snapper, parrotfish, and sometimes a sea turtle gliding past if you’re lucky.

The centre of the bay has a sandy bottom that’s ideal for swimming and floating. The water is calm on most days, though you’ll occasionally get some chop if the wind picks up from the north. Overall, it’s a versatile beach—equally good for a leisurely swim and for strapping on a mask and exploring the fringes.

Grote Knip has better infrastructure than its smaller sibling. There’s a larger parking area at the top (also free), and the walk down is via a paved path with steps—steep but manageable. At the beach level you’ll find a small snack bar selling drinks, local snacks, and sometimes fresh fish, along with basic toilet facilities.

There are some shaded spots under trees near the back of the beach, but they’re claimed early. If shade is a priority, bring your own beach umbrella. There are no lounger rentals here—it’s a public beach with a no-frills character, and that’s part of its charm.

The classic move is to combine Grote Knip and Kleine Knip in a single trip—they’re only a five-minute drive apart. Start at Grote Knip in the morning when it’s quieter, spend a few hours swimming and jumping, then head to Kleine Knip for the afternoon light and photos.

If you’re hungry after your beach day, the village of Lagun is just down the road and has a few local restaurants where you can grab fresh fish or a cold Amstel Bright. The west coast of Curaçao is peppered with beautiful beaches, so if you have a rental car, consider making a full day of it and hitting Playa Lagun and Playa Kalki as well.
